Ah, come on... this PostgreSQL vs. MySQL battle is as childish as Emacs vs. VIM.
Please, grow up.
If anyone needs to grow up it is anonymous cowards. Nothing of what I wrote is about PostgreSQL vs. MySQL, at least not about technical merits. So perhaps next time actually try reading what I wrote.
I agree with your entry, though I have a thought to add. The issue seems to be confusion between the MySQL the code base and MySQL the company. The company effectively ceased to exist when it was bought by Sun. Oracles purchase of Sun was just a continuation of the process. The code base will continue on in one form or another. The 'Save MySQL' campaign seems to more about pushing for a do over on the sale of the company, then a rescue of the code base. This is understandable as there where quite a few people who made money from MySQL AB. They now are quite rightly concerned about how they are going to make money in the new reality. As you stated that reality was foreseeable and the results of actions taken or not taken by the principals now involved in trying to undo them. My take is they trying to manipulate the FOSS community in order to get help to undo some bad decisions. It is not surprising that is happening, but I for one am not supportive of the campaign.
Adrian, you are right to distinguish between MySQL the company and MySQL the software. The MySQL developers considered what was good for the company was good for the software, and it is too late to undo that mistake. The PostgreSQL community leaders are very clear about their dedication to the software, so while we might make other mistakes, we probably will not make the same mistake the MySQL developers made.
