I noticed your tables do not have constraints on them. Won't this prevent PostgreSQL from achieving optimized queries via constraint exclusion?

See: http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.4/static/ddl-partitioning.html#DDL-PARTITIONING-CONSTRAINT-EXCLUSION

Patches to handle automatic partitioning within the database are in progress; see http://archives.postgresql.org/message-id/bd8134a40906080702s96c90a9q3bbb581b9bd0d5d7@mail.gmail.com for a recent implementation and http://archives.postgresql.org/message-id/1247564358.11347.1308.camel@ebony.2ndQuadrant for some of the remaining improvements it needs before being committed. Based on its current maturity and how helpful the feature would be, I expect that work to complete before the next PostgreSQL verison (8.5 or 9.0 or whatever it ends up being) is released.

The amount of code for automated partitioning proves that we would really need to have it managed in Postgres by some sort of partition template like in Oracle.
I have also implemented something like that, but it is pretty hard to implement partitioning for someone who haven't done it or has less experience with pgsql.

    Few remarks to the article.
I would use the ... tags to have the code shown in a better way, maybe with indenstation.
Them I would also include some example table, to show the relationship between the function code and the schema itslef.
You coul put a .sql file with all the relevant code for a simple try.
Anyway, your solutions looks very interesting, but needs some work be understood.

I look forward to using Recursive CTEs in the future. I agree, great release, but I'm a little disappointed that Hot Standby didn't make the final cut. A lot of work has been going into it, though, hopefully it will be ready in time for the next release.
